Coffee in the sunshine in Grand Rapids

Earlier this summer, I was in need of an afternoon drink and snack. Being pregnant will do that to you. I had heard about the new business Outside Coffee Co. on Wealthy Street and was curious. Since my office is on Wealthy Street, too, I set out in search of nourishment, excited about the potential of exploring a new spot. I would be getting in a walk, too.
When I approached the entrance to Outside Coffee Co., I began to slow down to take in my surroundings. The business feels like its tucked away completely, the traffic and sounds of busy Wealthy Street nothing more than a distant memory. In reality, it’s right next to Woosah Outfitters, a clothing store.

In the courtyard area, there are high top tables and low round tables covered by umbrellas. I remember it being incredibly hot during my visit, and I know all the guests must have been grateful for the shade. I saw guests working, talking and relaxing.
Coffee, ice tea, pastries and snacks were served from a small camper converted into a coffee stand. I opted for an iced tea and an order of avocado toast, because why not.

As I waited for my order, I found a spot at a high table. I had time to admire the gorgeous greenery in the garden that fills the space. My avocado toast came out beautifully. This is the first time I’ve seen avocado toast adorned with edamame. I wish I took a picture of it, but I didn’t. Trust me, this toast was delicious.
Even after I finished eating, I found myself lingering in this space. There was the pleasant background chatter of friends catching up and the back and forth of people on teams working. As with many coffee shops I love, it seems like a place where a chance encounter could lead to a new connection or relationship. Being outside, surrounded by nature was like being taken away from the chaos of everyday life into a calm, peaceful oasis. The best part is, I didn’t have to go far from my daily path at all.
If you want to take a peek at some of the sweets and treats offered at Outside Coffee Co., follow them on Instagram here. I took a look and it seems like the changing season is a reason to return to discover something new.
